Managing risk

For this type of project the most critical risk element, after that of environment and health and safety, is the potential that during or after completion the centre will fail to support the client’s business platform as required. This is a risk that must not be allowed to manifest itself at any stage.

The uninterrupted operation of the clients data centre following handover, or on certain projects during construction, must be taken as paramount to the success of the project. At no time can any activity be allowed to proceed that will endanger this critical issue.

At the start of the project we will take ownership of and develop a risk register. This will note all activities that may have an impact on the project from any source. The schedule will deal with items such as:

• Programme risks

• Cost risks

• Technical risks

• Health and Safety risks

• Environmental risks

• Future maintenance risks

• Risks to those systems and persons not directly involved on the project

The final element which must be considered, is the possibility of any risk to the environment. Any site activities that could have an impact on the environment must be eliminated to ensure viability of the project.

Each item on the schedule will be researched and assessment sheets generated so that the process of eliminating the risk is clear. All parties will be asked to lend their knowledge and skills to the process and only when all risks have been mitigated, will the assessment be signed off and the work cleared to proceed.
