Our Skanska Costain STRABAG joint venture (SCS JV) teams and individuals won a staggering four awards at this year’s Tunnelling Conference and Awards run by New Civil Engineer.

The annual awards, which were held at Hilton Bankside, brought together the tunnelling community for an interactive and immersive day filled with case studies, debate and future project updates.

The awards recognised achievements of individuals and teams and honoured not just the engineering and tunnelling expertise on our project but also the legacy and social value the joint venture has delivered.

SCS won the award for Project Legacy & Social Value recognising the project for creating a lasting legacy for the local community.

Judges said SCS’s nomination showed “a data driven approach led from the top to gain a deep understanding of the local community needs. The response to these needs demonstrates a culture that is committed to enhancing social value that has brought about transformational change, with many ideas that are industry leading and capable of being developed further in the future.”

SCS also won the award for Tunnelling Project Team of the Year

The award recognises a team involved in the construction of tunnels or tunnelling related infrastructure that have excelled in collaboration, delivery and problem solving.

Judges said SCS put forward “an exceptional submission clearly outlining how the contributions were made towards this category. The submission presented how the team worked collaboratively by involving wider team members, engaging the supply chain, and in close partnership with the Client. The submission also detailed how knowledge is retained and shared, not only for the project's benefit but for individuals, companies, and the industry. Clear evidence of innovative solutions for health, safety and environment.”

Sarah Duckworth, Senior Tunnel Engineer, was winner of the Young Tunneller of the Year award. Sarah delivers complex technical engineering with diligence and passion amongst many disciplines. Sarah developed complex analytical tools, one of which takes data from the TBM Programmable Logic Controller to determine reconciliation in a simple manner. Sarah's contributions to supporting Women in Engineering and STEM outreach programmes in schools will no doubt improve the future of the industry.

She impressed judges with her ability to seamlessly promote third party and stakeholder confidence in tunnel projects. Her dedication to improving both the technical, social and ecological aspects of the tunnelling industry earned her this prestigious recognition.

Dave Terry won the award for Outstanding Contribution to the Industry

Judges praised the way he fosters a culture of single-minded pursuit of ‘safe by design’ and technical excellence, while maintaining the confidence of client and numerous third-party stakeholders. He sits on the BTS committee and lecture on BTS courses. He is also a member of the IOM3 and the IOM3 membership committee, a scrutineer and assessor for the IOM3, and a Fellow of both IOM3 and ICE.

SCS were Highly Commended in the Health, Safety & Wellbeing Initiative of the Year for our Lithium Battery Electric Vehicles: Risk assessment and competency framework for use underground. SCS were finalists for our Groundwater Management of the Greenpark Way Vent Shafts in the Innovation in Shaft Design & Construction category.
