This is a significant milestone for the project as it now opens up part of the mainline route of the A428 which is key for moving earthworks material that will form the new western embankment at Caxton Gibbet junction.

Construction works on the A428 scheme commenced in earnest in January 2024 and continued through the wet weather of last year. To reach this stage has truly been a team effort combining the efforts of the many suppliers and various site teams. Their planning and coordination has resulted in the successful construction and opening of this section of the A428 improvement scheme.

The works included digging out 2km of drainage ditches, laying 13,500 tonnes of surfacing materials and installing 2.5km of drainage pipes, 350 new drainage gullies, 4km of new kerbs including wild-life kerbs and 10km of new ducts for diverted services and street lighting.

The next step is to safely complete the realigned junctions at Caxton Gibbet and Cambridge Road, St Neots which will allow the construction team to fully open up access along 8.2km of the route of the new A421 dual carriageway.

Willie McCormick, Skanska Project Director said: "This is a significant milestone on the A428 project and an amazing achievement by the East Delivery Team and supply chain partners. A real credit to teamwork and collaboration. I am immensely proud!"
