Skanska to construct £65 million The State Hospital in Scotland

Press release 08/02/2008 00:00 CET

Skanska has today been awarded a £65 million contract, to carry out construction work at The State Hospital, Carstairs for NHS Scotland.

Under the contract, Skanska will undertake the construction of a new facility covering an area of 19,000 square metres as well as the demolition, refurbishment and alteration of a further 1,500 square metres of existing buildings. Work also involves significant landscaping throughout the 60-acre site.

In addition to the construction works, Skanska will undertake the mechanical, electrical, voice and data installations for the new hospital.

The State Hospital provides care and treatment for patients with mental disorders who cannot be cared for in any other setting. The patients do not have access to other services or communities and therefore the hospital must be able to address all of their needs (therapeutic, vocational, social and physical) via a range of facilities within the perimeter fence.

To facilitate the needs of staff and patients and to allow the hospital to continue in operation with minimal disruption during the redevelopment, Skanska’s contract will be undertaken in three independent phases. Construction will begin in March 2008 and completion of the total scheme is set for summer 2011.

Skanska’s professional team for this project includes Macmon – lead architects, Rybka – Mechanical and Electrical Consultants and Faber Maunsell – Civil/Structural Consultants.

David Tydeman, Executive Vice President, Skanska UK said: "The award of this contract reinforces Skanska's commitment to being part of the redevelopment of essential social and community infrastructure in Scotland. The Staff at The State Hospital provide an excellent service to their patients and I am delighted we have been awarded this contract to create much deserved new facilities."
