Skanska Construction has won its first contract in Scotland since changing from Kvaerner Construction with a £5.3 million project to construct a five-storey cancer research building for the University of Edinburgh.
Working from its expanding Glasgow-based Scottish office, the company will build a new facility with offices, laboratories and a common room well as seminar and plant areas. The contract starts in November and is due for completion in December next year.
Constructed on pad foundations, the building will include a reinforced concrete ground floor slab, a structural steel frame, three reinforced concrete upper floors and a fourth floor plant room. Externally the building envelope will be a mixture of traditional masonry and render and aluminium cladding and glazed curtain walling. Its roof will also be clad in aluminium.
Internally Skanska Construction will install partitioning and joinery finishes in offices and will fully fit-out rooms for laboratory use. Suspended ceilings will be installed throughout. All mechanical and electrical installations will also be provided.
Skanska Construction’s Glasgow-based office is currently working on contracts with a total value of more than £36 million in Scotland. It is constructing a high quality office development in Tollcross, Edinburgh’s new commercial district; the Museum of Scottish Country Life in East Kilbride and has recently completed refurbishing the prestigious Scottish Justiciary Building in Glasgow.
