Skanska has started building the shell and core of a new £60m ground transport interchange for Manchester Airport, a crucial part of the airport’s ambitious expansion plans.
The interchange is needed to handle the airport’s anticipated growth in passenger numbers from the current 19 million a year to nearly 41 million by 2015. It will be a central transport hub for passengers arriving by train, light rail and coach, and the first properly integrated facility in the UK to include provision for passenger check-in facilities.
It is expected that the interchange will also generate non-air passenger users who will find the airport a convenient location to connect with rail, bus and coach services.
Skanska beat off four other contractors to land the project on a three-stage procurement route. During the familiarisation and design phase, Skanska helped shave over £1.5 million off the project cost through value management and engineering.
The scope of the project consists of the following main elements: the hub building structure, check-in and baggage handling facilities, coach and bus station, and an office block.
Project consultants include, for Manchester Airport, Abbey Holford Rowe, architect, Mott MacDonald, engineer, Citex, cost consultant, while for Skanska, consultants include Jefferson Sheard, architect and Scott Wilson, engineer.
