The Safety@Skanska partnership has now entered its second year. It began in January 2005 with a two-fold aim: to reduce harm by increasing 'near miss' reporting on Skanska's sites and in its offices, thereby raising much needed funds for Mencap.
"Whilst the first year of Safety@Skanska has been successful, there is still much more work to be done," said Neil Moore, Corporate Environment, Health and Safety Manager for Skanska UK. "Our safety culture at Skanska is progressing towards one of zero tolerance of any harm to our people and this partnership has helped to drive that forward. It's the change in our people's mindset that has been the most noticeable feature for Skanska to date."
The money raised from the 'Safety @ Skanska' programme will go towards Mencap and Enable's nationwide network of community support teams, which play a vital role in local communities. Their roles include supporting people with a learning disability and encouraging them to lead fulfilled and independent lives. Mencap and Enable both campaign on local issues and manages specialist services designed to increase the confidence, belief, and self-esteem of people with a learning disability.
For every near miss that is reported, Skanska donates a minimum of £1 to Mencap. For every accident that is eliminated as a result, Skanska will donate a minimum of £500.
