Press release 26/07/2013 16:00 CET

Two Skanska apprentices have scooped National Construction College (East) awards.

Nazir Huseinmiya, Colin Jackson, Peter McLeish, David Wragg

Nazir Huseinmiya won top prize in the construction operative category, with David Wragg winning in the second year civil engineering technician category.

Nazir also won the overall apprentice of the year award and will now go forward to the national CITB Apprentice of the Year awards at the O2 arena in November.

The awards are recognition for their outstanding work during their time at the National Construction College (NCC) at Bircham Newton, King’s Lynn.

Tom Matthews and Peter McLeish were also shortlisted in the first and second year civil engineering technician categories respectively.

On picking up his award Nazir, who is working on the Crossrail Eleanor Street & Mile End shaft project, said:

“It took a lot of hard work and dedication over the course of 20 weeks at the college.

“When I first arrived I didn't know what to expect but soon settled in as all the staff are excellent. The instructors were open to all my questions which helped with the course and will help in my career.

“On site I also have an excellent team around me who help me learn.”

David Wragg, who has been working on the Anglian water project for two years and recently moved to Crossrail Bond Street, added:

“The college and facilities are great. Everyone is friendly and helpful which makes learning and progressing easier. I'm really pleased to win.”

Guest speaker at the event, held on Thursday 25 July, was Olympian and presenter Colin Jackson.

NCC is the training division of CITB ConstructionSkills (Construction Industry Training Board), which has recently been rated as an outstanding independent training provider by Ofsted.

Greg Craig, civil engineering managing director at Skanska, said:

“We are delighted to have had four of our apprentices shortlisted for the awards this year.

“It’s deserved recognition for all their hard work during their time at the college and demonstrates how committed they are to pursuing a successful career in the industry.

“We are pleased to have sponsored the awards and I’d like to congratulate all the short-listed finalists for their excellent achievements.”
