Skanska to design and build £46m secure facility

Press release 06/03/2003 00:00 CET

Skanska’s successful track record in constructing secure accommodation has helped it win a £46 million contract to design and build Logford House Immigration Removal Centre in West London.

The work for Premier Detention Services, a subsidiary of long-term client Premier Custodial Group, involves providing the Immigration and Nationality Directorate with secure accommodation for 326 detainees awaiting removal from the UK. The building also includes a separate facility for Customs and Excise.

Following completion in Summer 2004, Premier Detention Services will operate the centre for eight years under a DBO (design, build and operate) contract.

The project continues a successful relationship developed with Premier Custodial Group on the custodial PFI programme that saw Skanska build five secure facilities in five years between 1996 and 2001. The experience and lessons learnt during this period have enabled Skanska to develop a fast-track 68-week design and build programme using the same supply chain and pre-fabrication techniques.

The design incorporates research Skanska undertook at previous projects for Premier Custodial Group to determine and refine aspects of operational performance with a proven record of success. Skanska is simplifying construction by using the latest 3D-computer modelling technology to integrate the pre-fabricated elements with the building services to enable quick, easy interpretation of quantities and dimensions.

Skanska will combine the skills of Skanska Integrated Projects with its M&E company, Skanska Rashleigh Weatherfoil, to carry out the contract, with Skanska Technology responsible for elements of the design. The three-storey facility includes air-conditioning, fire sprinklers in every room and appropriate security features.
