Press release 10/04/2002 00:00 CET

One of the longest-serving members of the management team at Cementation Foundations Skanska, Mike Spong (MICE), has retired after more than 33 years – the last 20 as a director

A chartered civil engineer, Mike, 63, started with Cementation at Maple Cross as a contracts engineer and went onto serve across virtually the whole spectrum of company activities, as contracts manager, departmental manager and divisional manager. In the late Seventies he was posted to Dubai as operations manager, setting up Cementation’s territory in the Southern Gulf.

Later, at board level, he headed up the South, Midlands and South-West. He was also responsible for environment, health and safety. During the past three years, as director of the newly-formed rail unit, he was instrumental in building and guiding the company’s fast-growing role in maintaining and restoring ageing track infrastructure on the London tube and national rail networks.

Colleagues described Mike Spong as an outstanding front-line operations director. Robin Wood, managing director of Cementation Foundations said: “His leadership and sound engineering abilities have made a big impact over the years. He is also a very cheerful, popular character who brightened up our working lives.”
