KVAERNER CONSTRUCTION TO BUILD THIRD PFI PRISON

Press release 02/07/1998 00:00 CET

Kvaerner Construction has signed a £30m design and construct contract with Premier Prison Services (PPS) for a new 400 place Remand Centre and Young Offenders Institution at Pucklechurch near Bristol.

This is the third PFI prison to be won by Kvaerner Construction. It follows the award last year of Kilmarnock in Ayreshire and the earlier contract for Lowdham Grange in Nottingham which was completed in a record breaking 14 months.

The 25-year operating contract for Pucklechurch has been given to PPS under the Government’s Private Finance Initiative. Kvaerner Construction will be responsible for the design, construction and equipping of this prison, which will include vocational training and industrial workshops, housing blocks, a combined educational, medical and sports facility, together with visitors accommodation and state-of-the-art security facilities.

Delivery of the fast programme and affordability demanded by this project is made possible by the ongoing development, by Kvaerner, of the design & construction techniques that have proved highly successful on the earlier schemes. Work on site begins this month and is due for completion in Autumn 1999.

Sister companies, Kvaerner Technology and Kvaerner Rashleigh Weatherfoil will also be involved in providing structural design and mechanical & electrical installations respectively, with Capita E.C. providing architectural support.
