Climate

Climate change refers to the significant warming of the Earth due to human activities over the last century. Scientists warn that without immediate action to curb a predicted global temperature increase of around 1.5°C, the consequences will be irreversible.

The primary driver is the rise in carbon emissions from human actions. These greenhouse gases, including CO2 and methane, trap heat in the atmosphere, causing it to warm up. For instance, 1kg of methane has the same warming effect as approximately 25kg of CO2.

Experts predict millions could be affected by rising sea levels and more extreme weather events like hurricanes. Economic damages could reach billions of pounds.

The construction industry significantly contributes to UK carbon emissions. At Skanska, we believe we must lead the shift towards a low-carbon future by proactively reducing emissions in buildings, infrastructure, and transportation.

By understanding these impacts, we can better appreciate why urgent action is crucial for our planet's future.
