Skanska is carrying out the construction and the mechanical and electrical engineering services for the redevelopment of 7 Millbank in Westminster, London.
The original stone-clad building was built in two phases between 1912 and 1929 as the HQ for British American Tobacco. The redevelopment entails construction of a new nine-storey office with two basement levels.
By reusing the original Portland stone façade, which has already been carefully dismantled and stored, the historical character of the building will be maintained. Behind the repaired and reconstructed façade, the new 130,000sqft building will boast modern accessibility standards, facilities for cyclists, a feature staircase, an atrium flooded with natural light, external space on upper-level terraces and a roof garden on level 8.
As with all our projects, our team will be actively reducing, monitoring and reporting on carbon throughout the construction. And, the finished building will incorporate numerous sustainable measures including urban greening on the terraces and roof garden, harvesting and recycling of rainwater and greywater and mixed-mode ventilation. It will be all electric and use air source heat pumps and 100% renewable energy.
The building is targeting environmental standards to achieve BREEAM Outstanding, WELL Platinum and Design for Performance to secure a Nabers 5* accreditation.
