As the Skanska Costain STRABAG joint venture (SCS JV), we are working towards HS2’s target of reducing the project’s carbon footprint by 50 per cent against the scheme’s baseline. Our carbon management system is focused on continual improvement and the implementation of carbon reduction measures.
Since the project started, we have focused on reducing carbon in the highest emitting areas – concrete, steel and energy/fuel use.
Our resource efficiency benefits, and subsequent carbon reduction solutions include:
- Carrying out zero trim piling, which reduces the amount of concrete used and breakout required in the finishing of piling works
- Using rail instead of road for transporting excavated materials, we achieved a 53% reduction in carbon emissions per day.
- Trialling the use of a hydrogen dual-fuel piling rig to install piles – a world first
- Actively trialling innovative solutions, such as Calcined London Clay as cement replacement and recycled steel fibres for concrete reinforcement.
