Sir Robert McAlpine procured Skanska's fabrication facility in Bentley, Doncaster, to design, manufacture and install all the plunge columns required for the top-down construction at a new five-start hotel and residential apartments in central London.
A total number of 149nr standard UC section and fabricated steel girder columns were manufactured incorporating head plates, studs and connection details. The column sections were joined on site and installed with a maximum length of 30m. The increased in-house fabrication capability ensured certainty in terms of quality and programme for the Client while provided an economical solution.
