The Skanska team working at the Vehicle Storage and Support Programme (VSSP) – to transform a key British Army fleet hub – teamed up with expert design planning and project controls partners, Adept Management. Together, they created an integrated design control and delivery approach from the outset.
So far, the administration building, the first vehicle storage facility and the first workshop have been successfully completed with further handovers planned in the coming months.
Through a structured baselining of all programme activities into an online planning system – known as Flow – the team created an integrated schedule and masterplan to allow the design progress and maturity to be visualised. This enabled key delivery milestones to be mapped to ensure the project’s challenging timescales were met.
“This is a great example of where collaboration between the design team and close attention to short-term planning has laid the foundation for the design and construction teams to successfully deliver to time – by aligning design delivery with a complex phasing of work across the site,” said Dan Bennett, Skanska’s Design Director.
“VSSP is a huge-scale project, and the design control approach has kept the overall programme on track and harnessed the benefits of repeatability in the buildings.”
John Steele, Adept Management’s Managing Director, said: “The Skanska team has embraced integrated collaborative planning as a core principle. They work with their partners and consultants to create an open, collaborative working culture that underpins efficient and effective delivery.
“It has been a pleasure to work with Skanska on VSSP and we look forward to continuing our working relationship over the coming years.”
