One of the largest-ever health schemes procured under a private finance initiative, University Hospital Coventry, provides extensive amenities for the people of Coventry and Warwickshire.
Built by Skanska for the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, the 1,212-bed acute hospital project included demolition of the existing facilities and construction of a mental health unit and support buildings.
Design, build, fund
We designed, built and funded construction of the hospital. The new facilities were created over 15 phases, ensuring the hospital remained fully operational throughout the build.
To reduce risk, give greater certainty on cost and delivery programme, and to help our customer visualise the project, we used building information modelling (BIM) during construction. Using BIM also enabled us to provide three-dimensional models to bring the structures to life and improve collaboration with our customer and subcontractors.
The completed 152,000sqm hospital has over 7,000 rooms containing more than:
- 25,000 power sockets
- 8,800 data outlets
- 3,600 telephone points
- 480 showers
- 990 toilets
- 500 x-ray illuminators
