Expertise in healthcare

Our world class work in healthcare features hospital settings that will touch lives around the world for generations to come.

By exchanging knowledge between our experienced global teams, Skanska is creating hospitals that will offer transformational patient care in facilities that are built efficiently and sustainably and built to last.

Our Global Healthcare Centre of Excellence shares best practice from projects across the world, to deliver new approaches to our healthcare projects.

With more than 75 live hospital projects across the UK, US and Nordic (2024), featuring design, build and facilities management, we understand hospitals. We understand how they work, and we understand their lifecycle. We also understand everything from healthcare estate development and clinical design to which doors and edge protections can stand the test of time.

Skanska’s experts deliver; whether it’s mega projects or zero carbon hospitals. All the time looking to how best they can use exciting modular elements, create state of the art flexible and adaptable spaces, and bring operational lifecycle thinking into the design.

But that’s not all, we love to listen and collaborate to ensure that what we build is fit for the needs of today and tomorrow. So, by working with patients, consultants, commissioners and healthcare professionals, we deliver solutions designed for the people who will use them. And, by leveraging our facilities, energy and waste management services we can make your buildings safer, greener and more efficient.

Our UK experts

We’re immensely proud of the major UK build programme that transformed many of our best-known hospitals and healthcare facilities.

Amounting to around £2.7bn, the program included Barts and Royal London Hospitals, Great Ormond Street and UCH Macmillan Cancer Centre, to name just three.

Our Design Director, Mike Major, has worked on some of the largest healthcare projects around the world, including Sweden and Norway as well as those in London.

Alongside Mike, several members from the UK build team worked on two of our joint ventures in the Nordics (Karolinska in Sweden and Tonsberg in Norway) transferring and exchanging knowledge and expertise. Each of these exciting projects has brought more learning and innovation, adding further value to our work in the UK.

Complementing our design and build credentials is our knowledge and experience in the long-term lifecycle of operating these critical and complex environments. Skanska Facilities Management teams currently operate five UK hospitals as well as a portfolio of contracts across four other key sectors.

More than 400 strong, and led by Operations Director, Sarah Westwood whose background includes more than 19 years in the NHS, our dedicated healthcare teams provide facilities management to these hospitals.

Management services include day to day operations and maintenance, lifecycle and major capital works. Services that keep the buildings and facilities at the forefront of modern healthcare delivery and support front line workers in hospitals across the country.
