Digital tag and track

Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency, has awarded Skanska funding towards a £1 million project to research through life real-time ‘tag and track’ methods. It has the potential to significantly improve the efficiency of construction programmes.

Real-time 'tag and track' methods

Over two years we'll be looking into methods of tagging different aspects of a construction project, capturing data from multiple supply-chain partners in a standard format.

The project has the potential to revolutionise the entire construction and maintenance process.

By using the latest techniques within digital engineering, we aim to marking project components with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags/barcodes to facilitate real-time monitoring of the manufacturing process, delivery to site, storage and installation.

Working with the BRE

The research has developed processes which are being incorporated into software by the BRE.

We are currently trailing this tracking technology with our partners, Integrated Doorset Solutions and Tarmac. There are many benefits, including better quality control which leads to improvements in operational efficiency.

The whole process will be automated, with the tags being linked to a programme schedule ensuring what's needed is available and delivered when required, with any delays being identified by the system in advance.

We are alongside our partners:

  • BRE
  • Multiple Access Communications
  • Integrated Doorset Solutions
  • Tarmac

The project is being co-funded by a grant from Innovate UK, an executive non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills, for over £500,000. Skanska will receive just over £200,000 of this grant towards its project costs of approximately £400,000.
