We completed construction of the state-of-the-art Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge in 2019. It was formally opened by the late Queen Elizabeth II later that year.

Beautiful and efficient

The new hospital was designed to combine a highly efficient clinical layout with a stunning external appearance. Set in beautifully landscaped grounds, it captures the essence of the original tuberculosis hospital that is now a pioneering heart and lung treatment and transplant centre of excellence.

The construction techniques used were specifically designed to allow for reconfiguration of the hospital over time ensuring it can adapt to changing needs in the future.

The 40,000sqm hospital has 310 beds, six operating theatres and six catheterisation labs.

Long term facilities management

Skanska are providing the hospital facilities management and capital and lifecycle asset replacement services until 2048.

This involves looking after specialist medical equipment, maintaining the fabric of the building and statutory compliance tests.

We run the facilities management helpdesk at the hospital and are responsible for asset management and a range of mechanical and electrical engineering activities.

Maximising energy efficiency

Building information modelling (BIM) technology was used to maximise energy efficiency and map all the building’s services. A clear plan of all the facilities ensures the hospital has long-term flexibility regarding the changing use of spaces. The technology was also used to engage clinicians during the construction process by bringing the building to life.

At the time of completion, Josie Rudman, Chief Nurse at Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, said: “So much thought has gone into the design of the new hospital and it’s wonderful to see how the layout and the facilities in the new building will help us deliver even better patient care. It is going to be a great place to work, and I just can’t wait to get there now.”
